Probably one of the greatest Romanian personality - the man who reinvented the system of education in Romania, who said that every village has to have at least one teacher in a new school! At this moment, in Romania, exist more then two hundred schools and high-schools with his name, an union (the teacher's union, of course), a university and, beyond these, a crater on the moon! He was a famous scientist, a mathematician, geographer, historian and a great politician - three times elected as minister of the Education in different cabinets!!! It you will look for the beginning of educational system in Romania you will find all those three man of state who are transformed in monuments that are in front of the University of Bucharest: Gheorghe Lazar (1779 - 1823), Ioan Heliade Radulescu (1802 - 1872), and Spiru Haret (1851- 1912).

Spiru C. Haret was a Romanian mathematician, astronomer and politician. He made a fundamental contribution to the n-body problem in celestial mechanics by proving that using a third degree approximation for the disturbing forces implies instability of the major axes of the orbits, and by introducing the concept of secular perturbations in relation to this. As a politician, during his three terms as Minister of Education, Haret ran deep reforms, building the modern Romanian education system. He was made a full member of the Romanian Academy in 1892. He also founded the Astronomical observatory in Bucharest, appointing Nicolae Coculescu [ro] as its first director. The crater Haret on the Moon is named after him.

Statuia lui Spiru Haret (1851-1912) face parte din ansamblul de 4 statui de la Universitate (alaturi de statuile lui Mihai Viteazu, Ion Heliade Radulescu si Gheorghe Lazar). A fost realizata de sculptorul Ion Jalea din marmura de Carrara si inaugurate in anul 1935.
