The National Institute of Heritage [NIH] is the main central body, under the authority of the Ministry of Culture and National Identity, responsible with implementing public policies in the field of cultural heritage in Romania. NIH is the direct follower of the first public institution in the field, the Commission of Historic Monuments, established by the 1892 law for the conservation and restoration of public monuments. NIH is charged with activities of research, inventory, protection and enhancement of all categories of cultural heritage – immovable, movable, intangible, and digital – and manages the official inventories of cultural heritage – the Historical Monuments List, the National Archaeological Record, the National Inventory of Movable Cultural Heritage, the National Register of Intangible Heritage and various digital databases and repositories. Furthermore, the NIH elaborates and manages the National Restoration Program for Historical Monuments [NRP] – the main state funding instrument for protection, restoration and enhancement of immovable heritage, it collects and manages the Historic Monuments Tax Stamp, it is the national aggregator for the European digital platform for culture – Europeana, it prepares nominations files for the World Heritage List, coordinates the national nomination process for the World Heritage Label. Shortly the NIH will also be responsible with the attestation of specialists and experts in the field of cultural heritage.
